This is the first part of a two-part interview with the always enlightening and entertaining Mark Rippetoe, who you’ve probably heard of if you take fitness seriously.

In case you don’t know who Mark is, though, he was a competitor powerlifter for a decade and is the author of several books, including two classics that everyone that’s into weightlifting should read–Starting Strength and Practical Programming for Strength.

Mark has also coached thousands of people all over the country on proper barbell training through his seminars, which you can learn more about at www.startingstrength.com.

He’s also just a fun guy to chat with because he’s colorful and just shares his thoughts and openly and isn’t one for euphemisms or minced words, which I think is refreshing, really.

So, in this interview Mark and I talk about the training for strength versus “aesthetics” and why there isn’t as much of a difference between the two as many people think.

This podcast really drives home an important lesson I learned years ago:

It’s very hard to build an all-around muscular, visually appealing physique without getting really strong on a handful of key exercises.

If you’ve been following my work for any amount of time, you already know this (and if you’ve implemented any of it, you’ve experienced it), but I think you’ll still get something out of the conversation.

Here it is…

5:19 – The simple truth about training for strength vs. aesthetics.

7:40 – Why strength programs are great for women.

16:00 – How getting strong helps guys get the bodies they want.

21:05- Want to get stronger? Then you probably need to gain weight.

24:00 – The simplest “hardgainer” cure out there.

29:55 – How much “good weight” can a guy in his hormonal prime gain in a year?

41:50 – A simple caveat for guys embarking on strength training.

50:44 – How much do genetics influence our strength and looks?

57:27 – You use training to get big and strong and diet to get lean.

Why ‘versus’? People have different goals. Why would you compare powerlifting to the preoccupations of young men wanting to improve their appearance? Why does everything have to be in competition? Get on with your powerlifting & macho posturing & allow the narcissists to get on with their steroids & waxing.

appreciate the vid. as a noob lifter i now realize that i have to revolve my isolations movements around my compounds movements if I want to jump higher and move faster. this may seem like a dumb question but what are the five basic compound lifts?

    • Derek S.

      August 13, 2019 at 4:24 pm

      Low Bar Squats
      Deadlift
      Overhead Press
      Bench Press
      Power Clean.

Buy Starting Strength, or even Marks Starting Strength App, as he explains these exercises artfully. If your more into videos, Mark did a series on the basic lifts on the Art of Manliness youtube channel.

I cant agree with Mark on people training for aesthetics by skipping legs and only doing certain muscles. Look at someone like David Laid who teains for aesthetics but can deadlift almost 700 pounds at a bodyweight under 200 lbs.

    • Quintin Brown

      August 13, 2019 at 4:24 pm

Heith Heithinson you’re joking right? literally everyone knows David Laid has been on steroids for years now

  22. dudeman209

    August 13, 2019 at 4:24 pm

If you train for both strength and speed, your body will keep its body fat numbers relatively low as you build strength, but you really need to eat like a machine for it to work. The key to maintaining low body fat as you get stronger is to focus on maintaining/increasing speed and agility, which is absolutely possible. It will keep body fat gain to minimal cuz of the speed and agility adaptations being forced upon it.

The key x-factor to building lean mass while avoiding fat gain is speed, which no one does. No one wants go out and run wind sprints until you feel like you’re about to collapse, but if you can pull up your deadlift to 400 and squat to 300 while improving your sprint speed, you’ll get bigger and won’t get fat.

FWIW, I’m ~178 lbs @ 12% body fat and got my deadlift from 200 to 400 while my bodyweight went up from 175 to 183 over a span of ~6-7 months where my body fat maxed out at ~14%. Now, I’m getting it back down to 175 lbs before I start adding on more muscle. If you’re naturally lean, cutting cycles don’t last more than a month or two.

  24. Austin Murphy-Park

    August 13, 2019 at 4:24 pm

I enjoyed the video, but I wonder what modifications Mark would suggest for someone in their mid 30s in their first year of lifting. I’m 175 pounds and 8% body fat, but I don’t think I can handle a gallon of milk a day (and at my age I imagine it would do more harm than good).

    • Rob Host

      August 13, 2019 at 4:24 pm

Austin Murphy-Park 8% at 175 sounds ripped to me unless you’re really y’all. Just maintain where you are

  29. lemon tree

    August 13, 2019 at 4:24 pm

Brilliant video. I disagree with Mark about getting a heavier bench means a bigger chest. That’s not always the case, lots of people can be strong bench pressers and not have a big chest, as alot of it is triceps and shoulders too. Many people don’t even touch flat bench press and just do Incline, decline and flys and have a huge chest but a weak bench.

    • lemon tree

      August 13, 2019 at 4:24 pm

@Thomas James M yeah of course, but I was talking about getting a big chest not a big bench.

    • Thomas James M

      August 13, 2019 at 4:24 pm

the reason they have a ‘weak bench’ is usually lack of practice/neural efficiency. Sure you can build a great chest with other variations but if you want to get good at flat bench you need to do the lift itself. If any of those guys started flat benching regularly they would get more efficient at performing the exercise they would soon be moving big numbers.

Well regarding the calories and gaining fat, look at Dr Nun S. Amen Ra. One plants based meal per day and is jacked and strong. Look at Clarence Kennedy. Super strong weightlifter. We don’t need to drink any milk and we don’t need any meat. We can eat plenty of protein through plants. We have to remember that becoming strong and lean has a ton to do with hormones. HGH production becomes insane when we are in a fasted state. Do research. It is counter intuitive, but look at the science. Also, beware of eating too much protein. Eating over 100g per day most likely will hurt you more than help. If you do choose to drink milk every day make sure to get organic, grass fed milk. Raw if possible. There are too many hormones and other crap in conventional milk. Eat more lentils and less meat. You will be healthier and get more nutrients. And it is way cheaper.

Great Podcast! And love that Mark points out the benefit of strength training for building muscle mass and size. This is something that most trainers and many Bodybuilders I have run into will never agree with. So often these naysayers say it is an approach best left in the dark ages of Bodybuilding history. When I hear or read this I just laugh. Many champions to this day will attest that strength training (Powerlifting) is the best, and primary way to get hard massive slabs of muscle mass. This strength training is done FIRST then once you have mountains of muscle you cut down. Yes, you will put on some fat, and yes it takes much longer, but it can be the difference between coming in the top 3 of a contest. This is not just Mark’s position, but Arnold’s and many other Bodybuilding champions. Yes, food plans have come a long way and moving beyond just what you could do 50 years ago is a good thing. Again great podcast.

Rippetoe made a little bit of a false dichotomy near the end when he said that anyone can get strong but Mr. Olympia stage is out of reach for many if not most; powerlifting world championships are ALSO out of reach for most people. Anyone can get much stronger but they can also improve their physique greatly. Making it to Olympia is the powerlifting equivalent of benching 700 pounds raw, which is not going to happen unless you’re already benching 300 the first time you go to the gym (a made up number but you get the idea). It’s easy to do just a few lifts in the gym, eat a bit sloppy and think ‘genetics’ every time you look in the mirror; that’s all too convenient for the lazy and unmotivated. Arnold (mentioned in the video) did more exercises for his forearms and biceps than there are movements in powerlifting and olympic lifting put together (a total of 5). If you want to bring out the details in your physique, bare bones powerlifting is not going to cut it.

  66. mies vailla nykyisyyttä

    August 13, 2019 at 4:24 pm

The whole “strength” program thing is misleading because it overvalues old powerlifting movements as being particularly important, which they are not. The same muscles can be worked just as efficiently without the same risks and strength is always somewhat movement dependent. Instead of a strength program it should be called a powerlifting plus some chins thrown in program. Your strengths will be strong and your girlfriend who works on her forearms, calves, lateral delts etc. will be stronger than you in the exercises she trains.

I get his point @22:00 but no one is gaining 75 pounds of muscle in their life, let alone in 2 years. His 70% mark would be more reasonable if he said 50 pounds. 35 pounds of muscle in a lifetime is a much better goal.

Mark I stumbled across you video looking for a new strength building video . First I liked to say I will be 73 this August and I started lifting at the age of 14 with just a steel pipe with coffee cans on the end filled with concrete. I got my hands on A Weider magazine and I was hooked . I was raised up in the country and worked hard and latter on went to college and became a CPA but never quit lifting . When I was in my 50’s I opened up a Gym . I this point in my life I was a strong believer in the Mike Mentzer and Reg Park strength building concepts . I wished I had seen this video 50 years ago . This is with a doubt the best information on how to reach your strength goals etc. I have also, looked at your videos today on squat , press, row , and dead lift application. In closing I would like to say I’am 5’5″ 175 and 35 waist and bench 270 squat 315 and deadlift 475. I’am always trying to get stronger . Seven years ago I stared cycling and currently I’am cycling 100 to 150 miles a week . I did this to help with having a blood clot in my leg behind my knee . It helps but it takes away from my recovery in my strength training . So I decided to devote this winter to strength training only with an occasional bike ride on Sunday’s . Again thanks for the great video and sorry if I went on to long . Life is Great!!

Coach, a cosmetologist usually just does stuff like hair or make up or nails. An esthetician will do services like facials, pore cleansing, microdermabrasion, etc. You will rarely find an esthetician who does hair styles. The two things sort of overlap in that you may find ones who do nails or makeup but the hair part never seems to overlap and seems to be the purview of cosmetologists only.

Sprinters also get big arms. I love to show people google image searches of “track sprinter” (the word track is needed to remove the vans) and marathon runners. I hate marathon runner bodies. They are disgusting to me. Sprinters look great throughout their entire body, and I don’t think they are all doing bench presses and chins.

    • Gort Baringa

      August 13, 2019 at 4:24 pm

Virtually all modern sprinters lift for both lower and upper body; if they don’t do bench presses or chins they do some other similar movements, such as decline presses, pulldowns, etc.

      August 13, 2019 at 4:25 pm

Also, I’d like to point out, that I’ve added 40lbs to each arms curl since listening to Mark, and as of yesterday, I finally figured out why I can military press well over 300 lbs but at the same time can’t bench more than 160 lbs. The comments on this page are sad, do they even work out? I’m not trying to gain strength so much as lose weight by sitting on my ass. Marks strategy and guides so far are great for that. I went from 260 lbs to 220 lbs, and now I’m sort of staying steady at 230 lbs. Thing is, that 10 pound gain was also another 1″ off of my waist.

At some point I’ll probably have to start dieting, but I enjoy eating 8 gallons of ice cream each month and 4 pounds of white chocolate. Plus, even though I know I’m not loosing as much fat as fast as I’d like, I like my free time. Plus I love eating 4,000 plus calories a day without worrying about it. Once I’m around where I wish to maintain, I’ll start cutting down on what I eat.

Anyway, besides the point, Marks advice is good as it works, and that matters more. Plus, here’s the key: Not one injury in the year since I started listening to him.

Marks whole “screw abs” philosophy is dead wrong – not for esthetics but for balance and health. All the heavy bending and squatting in his program overworks the back, and hip flexors and will leave u with serious forward pelvic tilt, back pain, tight hanmies & injury-prone Achilles…unless u hammer your abs to counterbalance. SS for 4 months left me in a hole im still trying to get out of, balance wise

    • Seryerie

Well the milk does account for close to 2000 cals a day in the Rip-diet … so I would suggest you get really really fond of eggs beef and pork instead. But remember that to account for this level of proteins and cals, you would have to eat close to 2.5 lbs of extra meat every day … so yes, pretty tough.

      August 13, 2019 at 4:25 pm

      billytheweasel
Letting your host ask questions is common courtesy, and when he has something to say he gets to talk, you people are just fanboys who can`t take any interruption of your hero lmfao..
      It`s a conversation, not a monologue..

    • A Frog

      August 13, 2019 at 4:25 pm

If the guests won`t stop talking, yes you do, his guest interrupts all the time..
And as a host of a program/show, you need to take control of the conversation, so you get to ask the questions you have planned, often because the viewers have requested that they be asked.
Also, there`s probably lag between the two of them, so a certain amount of them talking over each other is to be expected..

    • billytheweasel

I lost 80 pounds with no exercise. Now I’m 340 which is finally light enough to to start lifting. I cut my calories to around 2500-3000 per day. I tried an unweighted squat at the start and hurt for a week. Now I can do them with no pain. I’m on my way.

    • Anders Green

      August 13, 2019 at 4:25 pm

“Unweighted squat at the beginning but hurt for a week” But if I do the math, that “unweighted” squat was 340+80=420 pounds, when including the body. So, that’s a lot dude! I’ve been at it a year, I just squatted 205 with a 180 pound body, STILL not as much! Sounds like you’re kicking ass, where are you now?

    • Homesickfobbit

      August 13, 2019 at 4:25 pm

I’ve lost 91 pounds with no exercise as of yet. When you start at 420 you can eat a lot and lose weight. Now I’m at 2,000 to 2,400. If one goes from 6,000-8,000 to 1,500 too fast one may fail. I am incrementally reducing my food intake.

    • MultiCaloka

A lot of young females in my gym trains only ass targeting exercises. They do that for an hour. ass…ass and ass, set after set exercise after….and they do that several times a week. And they all walk around with bigg bubblebuts and skinny upper body and calves. The look like Donald Duck. Every magazine for women talk about how to train the but. You should se the strange exercises they do at the gym just to hit the but. This cant be good for the pelvic tilt to have that a strong behind…..And who came up with the idea that it was aesthetic to be skinny with just an enormous musclebut?

I have become stronger every week single week and my body is just warming up to strength training. I stood in a Post Office today and felt like a Oak Tree. I was already big but looking big and looking strong is different. You move like you’re strong when you ARE strong.

No.  Rip’s saying that while a person is still a “novice” (his definition:  able to put more weight on the bar every workout), full-body exercises will affect the full body.  I did R;p’s linear progression, and was still making this progress when my squats were 330 for 3 sets of 5.  If you’re doing it right, everything is flexed.  Hard.  Harder at 330 than when my squat was 185.  I didn’t do any direct bicep training while on the novice linear progression (pulls were deadlifts and power cleans), but my biceps grew anyway.  They grew *better* when I became an intermediate and trained them with chins and curls too, but they grew as a novice just from isometric tension during squats and deads.  Same happened for my two sons when they did the Starting Strength linear progression.

You can squat holding dumbbells, they call it Bulgarian squat. Try hold 100 pounds dumbbells on each side. Your arms will grow like never before.

You can squat holding the barbell high.

      August 13, 2019 at 4:25 pm

You just lack common sense to understand what Mark is saying. INCORPORATING these lifts into your programme will HELP you build bigger pecs because they increase your overall testesterone levels. This OF COURSE only applies to areas that you are ALREADY WORKING. So yeah doing squats will make your chest and arms grow, it will actually make everything grow a little better. Unless you are an idiot of course and only do squats and expect everything to grow xD so it’s just that squats AID you to build BIGGER muscle through increasing your overall testesterone levels IF you are ALREADY training said muscle.

You see these guys in the gym who who are big and bulky and can lift a decent amount on the bench press but look like crap. I would rather have a really bad bench press but look decent all round because at the end of the day i can see what progress i do have. Whats the point in having good strength when you cant see it because their diets suck. I care more about looking better overall aesthetically and at least it can be noticed rather than having better strength that you cant notice anyway, they will just look like a bigger version of what they already are. I would rather be weaker and look better than be strong and look like crap. Good podcast i liked this one. Mark said theres no point having abs you cant go outside half naked anyway although if you have abs the rest of your body will also look better.

Well Matt himself is a big promoter of heavy lifting, if you don’t know yet. Do starting strength until you can squat 400 deadlift 500 bench 300 and overhead press 250(pretty sure that’s Mark’s standards correct me if I’m wrong). Then do any sport you want, that initial strength should carry over into any sport. And focus on getting pretty abs and burning fat after you reach those goals.

    Rip gotta rip

  193. Coldkillah

    August 13, 2019 at 4:25 pm

I agree with Mark Rippetoe on a lot of what he has to say and he’s a great coach. Especially the remarks he made about skinny people. So many skinny people want to be big and gain muscle but they don’t want to lose their abs. They are the type to go into the gym, do some half-assed routine and then wonder why they aren’t getting any bigger. And when somebody tells them they need to eat more they are like “but I don’t want to get fat”.

What a lot of these kids don’t realize is is that you need to be in a caloric surplus (for the most part) in order to gain muscle. A catabolic environment isn’t conducive to muscle growth. And with a caloric surplus inevitably some of that will be fat and you will lose some definition. That is what a lot of skinny people refuse to acknowledge, therefore they will eat less and still wonder why they made zero gains.

He does make another great point about looking great in a shirt. Unless you are banging superficial chicks everyday that care about a six pack (TBH a 6-pack on an anemic kid probably doesn’t come across as sexy to most girls), it doesn’t matter that much how you look without a shirt. Not like you are walking around shirtless in public 24/7. You are going to spend most of your life walking around in a shirt so why not train to look good in a shirt when it comes to general aesthetics. A girl is going to see you with a shirt on first (usually) if that’s your motivation for training.

What I don’t agree with Rippetoe on is his “YOLO Bulks”. They really are yolo bulks if you think about it. I understand the position he is coming from but there is no need to go from 12% BF to 25% BF in a few months. He mentioned a hypothetical example of a kid gaining 30 lbs in a few months. That’s just way too much and it really isn’t necessary to look like a flat slob in order to gain muscle. I’ve made those mistakes trust me. And I highly doubt 70% of that weight will be LBM. You could justify a larger weight gains in kids who are 13 years old all the way till they’ve finished puberty/growing naturally, but still like 10 lbs a month is way too much.

Gaining all that fat means you are going to spend a LONG time cutting and trust me restricting calories and doing cardio isn’t fun at all. You are going to feel weaker, your lifts will probably drop and it just isn’t a pleasant process to be going through for extended periods of time. I’m more a fan of the slower “lean bulk” approach where you gain 3 lbs a month (4-5 if you are really skinny or still in high school) for an extended period of time (say a year) and then spend 2-3 months cutting excess weight (say a rate of 4-5 lbs a month depending on how much you weigh). And then repeat the cycle again except gain and lose slower. The longer you stay in a caloric surplus without getting extremely fat, the more strength you are going to gain, the less fat you have to lose and the less time you have to stay in a caloric deficit (which inherently in itself will cause your lifts to get weaker).

Becoming fat is one way to put on muscle, and some powerlifters do it to achieve certain benchmarks and goals, and if you don’t mind it go ahead and do it. Probably isn’t the healthiest either but if that isn’t your goal it’s whatever. However it isn’t the only way. Slower lean bulks coupled with moderate-paced cutting is the way to go.

    • Coldkillah

      August 13, 2019 at 4:25 pm

In another scenario, we can take a 5’9 155 lb 12% BF kid and have him gain 30 lbs in a year. At least 60% of that will be LBM and the other 40% fat. That puts him at around 185 lbs with 16.5% BF. Don’t be fooled by anybody this is actually VERY good progress and he isn’t fat either.

Have him cut 5 lbs a month for 3 months. I would say half of it should be fat, the other half is a mix between muscle loss and water/glycogen loss. So say it is 7.5 lbs of fat loss, 5.5 lbs of water and 2 lbs of muscle. He is now successfully 5’9, 170 lbs with around 13.5% BF. Again that is amazing progress. He can now spend a good part of the year bulking to 190 lbs and then repeating the same process.

Of course granted this is assuming everything goes well, as injuries may happen, days may need to be taken off, may even need to take a week off due to soreness of joints.

Well, nothing new from Rip, that is new. I tried SS multiple times. First time with the proper kcal amount, but shitty form so I got stuck early although I got from 63 kg to 83 kg BW (15 to 23% BF), than proper form but anxious about the BF, so I got stuck the other way. Recently I gave it another shot. 67 kg BW to 77-78 kg with 12% BF to 18% BF, but squat got stuck pretty early (107,5 kg) Deadlift (117,5 kg) and with press and bench press I only could put on 7.5 kg respectively 5 kg additionally on the 5 RM. I ate about 3800 to 4000 kcal a day.

The BF is measured with a caliper and I don’t know how exact that is.

I was1.78 m in height and 35 years old while doing the last run. Than tried to get rid of some of the excess fat. But going down to 15% BF took me down to 70 kg BW and I almost lost any gains on the exercises altough my defict was never bigger than 500 kcal and my protein intake about 3g of protein per 1 kg of BW.

Maybe, it would be better to not go for the fast approach but go up with a 300-500 kcal surplus and program that is more advanced. I’m ok with gaining fat, but the amount of fat gain was higher than the 70:30 ratio mentioned here.

JayvH I lose tons of strength when I cut too, it used to really bother me till I looked back on my records and what I was lifting at the same or similar weight in the past and for me it’s always higher.

Not a lot but it’s higher all the same abd it keeps me going. I just follow the +-500 calories to bulk and cut as best I can and just keep going up and down and up and down in weight.

    • JayvH

      August 13, 2019 at 4:27 pm

      @Christopher Ward
Is it really up to me to gain more strength by ganing more fat or more muscle. Even Rip says, that ‘fat doesn’t flex’ so I think muscle is always preferable over fat and not just for aesthetic reasons.

I just can’t figure out what’s wrong with my cuts when I lose pretty much all of my strength gains.

      August 13, 2019 at 4:27 pm

Once you hit the hallowed ‘wall’ (noob gains limit) you are dealing with the funnest beast of all. With the exception of gaining a mechanical advantage (belts and straps or the way you do the exercise), the only way to get stronger is to get bigger and by nature of that, fatter.

Whether you do it quickly and put on the pounds in fat is up to you. I have bulked and cut for the last 3 years I have been lifting and done it about 4 full times, each and every single time I am at the peak of my Bulk or the end of my Cut, I am stronger than the last time I did it (I track all my weights/reps/sets etc), I also look better, larger and have less fat (at the end of a cut obviously).

IS my way great? Fucked if I know but obviously it works.

I followed Rippetoe’s nutrition advice along with the SS program years ago and became fat. If you want to create fat cells that you’ll struggle to keep under control for the rest of your life, a double chin and an unattractive fat face, power to you.

Abdul Majeed mark rippetoe is a powelifting/weightlifting coach. He won’t teach you how to get good legs or get swole. You can’t get strong by just doing leg press, leg extensions and hamstring curls.

    • Yousuf Individual

That guy obviously hates skinny people. I just looked up healthy weights on 5 different sites and every one of them says I’m at a healthy weight at 5’8″ and 150. The guy looks fat if not obese. No wonder he hates skinny people. I’ll take ripped and thinner over flabby and overweight any day. Everyone hates you if you’re skinny and don’t eat that much? Come on man. Your hate for skinny people is so obvious. I had been at about 130 lbs for the last 30 years and didn’t have an eating disorder or psychological issues. I have a super fast metabolism and its been hard to gain weight. Took 3 mos. of eating way more than I want and a weight training program to finally gain 20 lbs.

Hey Mike, I have read your bigger leaner stronger book, which is great, as well as your fitness mistakes one. In bigger leaner stronger you talk about 30-40g protein before workout, although in the fitness mistakes you say that fasting can be a good way to lose fat, as long as you have the drink to not slow down muscle growth. I don’t know which is better, considering they’re conflicting whether or not to eat or not before a workout? Some help would be appreciated, as I don’t recall you talking about fasting in the bigger leaner stronger?

diesel828 I wouldn’t call a 405×2 squat weak for a non competitive lifter, I don’t think anyone in a commercial gym is gonna see a guy deadlift 500, squat 400, bench 300, press 200, and chin 300 (at 200lb body weight) and day he’s weak, in fact he’s probably gonna be the biggest and strongest guy in a commercial gym 95% of the time.

  232. Brutha Fromanothamutha

    August 13, 2019 at 4:27 pm

Hi Mike, I am a big fan of yours and Mark’s; in fact I own books from both of you. This interview confused me when you started talking about different approaches for old, overweight guys in regards to diet. Mark says everything stays the same for overweight guys except the GOMAD. I am 41 years old and despite training for about a year and a half and besides some strength gains at some movements, you couldn’t tell by looking at me that I even train. I train heavy but quickly hit plateaus for moths on end and I have recently discovered through Alan Thrall that this is probably because my mobility and form sucks (particularly my OHP and squats are simply not right and probably doing more harm than good because my ROM sucks a$$). I am 177 cm at 97 kg, and I’d guess my BF is about 25-30%. I can bench press about 115 kg as 1 RM (which is way more than I can squat, although I can DL about 140 kg for 3 reps). At my weight I should be progressing much faster. So which is it? Do I eat in an excess to build muscle and like Mark says, “worry about that later?”. Or do I continue trying to be in a deficit and make no gains at all in terms of body composition? Thanks for all that you guys contribute to the industry, I wish I lived around the corner from one of you! In Germany, good, affordable personal trainers are scarce, if not non-existent.

    • Eastwood Colts3s

      August 13, 2019 at 4:27 pm

Read Starting Strength, follow the program to the letter. Learn how to squat like Rippetoe recommends and keep it real simple.

ATG isn’t typically what you want to be doing to get stronger. Squatting to parallel is more than enough to get you very strong. Furthermore, due to hip anatomy, you may not want to be doing ATG squats anyway.

I would hit up the starting strength forums for advice. They’re always happy to help dudes.

    • Brutha Fromanothamutha

      August 13, 2019 at 4:27 pm

+Eastwood Colts3s to be honest i don’t do low bar squats. i would like to master high bar squats as they seem to allow me to go lower (are atg squats with low bar even possible?). although even bodyweight atg squats hurt my knee yesterday. also since i do heavy deadlifts my traps and posterior chain are getting plenty of work. or what would you recommend?

    • Eastwood Colts3s

      August 13, 2019 at 4:27 pm

Mobility is rarely an issue with the ‘Starting Strength’ low bar squat. The squat is a complex multi-joint movement that takes a while to nail down. I would suggest recording your squat sets and uploading them to the Starting Strength forums. There you can get advice on how to improve.

you could try to eat a high starch diet, you will lose weight fast without struggle because they are very filling and it’s almost impossible to overeat since starches are not calorie dense but have high volume. If you want more information on this topic check dr john mcdougall out.

Aesthetician: Being derived from “aesthetics”— which is a branch of philosophy whereby one gains the knowledge/appreciation of the nature of beauty, especially in art—an aesthetician is one who is able to consult foremost using their knowledge of beauty & design, and additionally, would also utilize a technical skill (i.e. facials, makeup application, etc.).
Cosmetologist: One who learns and practices the technical skills of beautification, specific to the hair, skin and nails (more of a trade, less of a philosophy in nature). So an art student would study aesthetics as well, but the technical skills are different compared to a cosmetologist.

Mike, I love the podcasts and everything you put out. Here is my dilemma. I started last October at 24% bf 232 lbs. I’ve been training hard and cutting. I’m at ~11% bf and 185 lbs 6ft tall. I keep having people tell me I need to gain weight but I think I look fine. I dream of abs but only have a faint outline at this point. Should i just go into a bulk, and forget about abs for 6 months? Or should I cut another %1 or so then bulk?

      August 13, 2019 at 4:27 pm

My wife is not going to cheat on me lmao. My physical shape is of no consequence to her. She is not shallow and if your significant other cares that much about appearance than you are in trouble.

I don’t care what chicks think. I’m married. I care about what I see in the mirror. I still see myself as fat. I want to be ripped.

    • The A.D.D. Gamer

      August 13, 2019 at 4:27 pm

+JBLAZE999 Yeah I get what you are saying about abs. I’ve been fat my entire life and have always dreamed of a flat belly. I’m close at this point. I think I’ll keep cutting a few more weeks. I think people just aren’t used to seeing me lean. I am in now way anorexic and I have definitely added some muscle.

    • UP&UNDER85

      August 13, 2019 at 4:27 pm

I think his reply would be keep cutting to get the abs, accept the muscle loss if possible, then go back to maintenance plus 10% to gain muscle, keep an eye on the fat/abs, then cut again if needs be. Cycle this cut/minor bulk as needed. Its on his site. Remember your body might not show abs very well, and they aren’t an indication of fitness. What’s other peoples thoughts?

  250. Stephon Clinkscales

    August 13, 2019 at 4:27 pm

He said lifting heavy bench press with make chest bigger which is a damn lie. If you want that aesthetic physique with the chest you must isolate the muscle. Compound movements are nice but they don’t build muscle faster than isolations. That just don’t make since. Chest flies target the chest muscles more than bench press.

cosmetologist: a person who gives beauty treatments (qualified to perform pedicures, cut hair, or work with hair chemicals)
aesthetician: a person trained to administer facials, advise customers on makeup and the care of skin and hair, etc (skin care only)

  261. Dawdy Drums

    August 13, 2019 at 4:27 pm

    Negative comment:
I agree with a lot of the things he was saying, but he seems pretty headstrong in all of his anecdotal evidence, much of which include elements that have been outdated and invalidated as the most efficient way. A lot of his “the only right way to do it” methods are old school and outdated. I’m sorry, but a gallon of milk a day sounds like a disaster to me. He said it had “good carbs,” but the carbs in milk is just straight sugar. That kind of indicated to me that he doesn’t pay too much attention to the science behind his anecdotal evidence.
I’m not saying that his methods dont work, because they obviously do after 40 years of experience, but I feel like well-learned guys like Mike can accomplish their goals more efficiently by studying up on the science and “manipulating” the system. Work smart and hard, right? Not just hard. Hoooowever….

    Positive comment:
I appreciate his core thoughts and the science behind being in an anabolic state, etc, and being okay with gaining some fat to reach the goal (aesthetic or strength alike). He definitely taught me a lot and brought a lot of good info to the table for me 🙂 Thanks for the video Mike, and thank you Mark for being awesome!

Well better a gallon of milk than being underweight isnt it?

    • Joel Campuzano

      August 13, 2019 at 4:27 pm

He’s stuck in “past methods” because they worked then and they still work now. And because the truth of the matter is that if they work, then there must be a scientific explanation as to why they work every single time. Its hard to disagree with facts even if the person saying them is coming off “headstrong”.
