i started lifting in october of 2018. before i started whenever i would get gas i would have difficulty holding the nozzle, my hands would get tired and start to hurt. Now I can hold the nozzle no trouble, my hand doesn’t hurt or get tired! i was surprised when i realized it and i 100% attribute it to strength training and a better diet

HI Joanna. Love your videos. I am looking to loose a lot a weight and want to start strength training. Whole body weight training. I have access to multigym (this one exact – http://www.avonfitnessmachines.com/product/292/commercial-5-station-multi-gym(with-m.s.-steel-weight-stages)). I looked through all your videos and did not find any videos on using multigym machines. Please make a video on how to use these multigym machines for a full body strength training. Most women have these machines in their residential complexes. Will help women like us a lot. Thanks in advance.

That’s called a pump and it’s a decent sign that you are stimulating the correct muscles and allowing them to grow. The whole point of lifting weights is to make muscles grow and/or improve strength.

Does pilates count as weight lifting considering you’re only using your body weight?

    • Outmuscle Your Fork

      July 6, 2019 at 4:26 am

“Only bodyweight” can be pretty damn heavy. Depends on the motion and the rep range you can manage. There are only a small fraction of humans in this world who can do one-arm pull-ups, for example, as that’s an epic amount of relative load to put on one arm no matter how light you are.

Meanwhile with any bodyweight exercise, if you can crank out dozens of repetitions in a single set, that’s “light”. If you can only do 3, that’s incredibly heavy and you’re reaching a triple as utilized by powerlifting training. For isometrics, if you can do a static hold for more than 30 seconds, that’s pretty light. If you can only do it for 5 seconds, that’s pretty heavy.

With your 25 minute total body strength training, precluded by a warmup and ending with the stretches, my workouts total to 45 minutes.
Are you saying that the strength training itself should reach 45 – 60 minutes, and not just as a part of the workout?

i do weight lifting, it’s more challenging for work out instead only using body weight. i’m debated with my friend (guy), he told me not to do so because it will make me look manly or bulky (i do have broad shoulder than any women, i think it’s common things when you do sport). and he said it because he was like that, his muscle got bigger and he think it doesn’t look good for him. well, i said i do lifting because it’s help me challenge myself and it won’t make my muscle bigger if i only doing regular work out (2-3 times a week). he still insist that i’m better not to do weight lifting, he told me from his experience. maybe or not maybe he forgot that i’m a woman :”

Wonder if anyone could help me please…
I’m 5’3 and was 150 pounds, I started eating 1200-1250 calories a day for the last 6 months and I’ve lost 2 stone.
I do mostly strength training and I eat more calories depending on how much I’ve burned.
I still want to lose more body fat- currently at 23%, was at 31% but now I don’t know how to eat more without putting on the fat I’ve lost, should I do a reverse diet?
    Thanks for any help

I haven’t seen ANY positive visual changes (from workouts) to my body till I started lifting things over (and way over) 22 lbs regularly )) and I started in my 30s! So girls, leave your 2 lbs pink dumbbells alone and pick up the real ones, and you will LOVE the results.

The only way women can look bulky from lifting weights is either taking steroids, HGH or other hormones, or having unnaturally high levels of testosterone (which is unhealthy 4 women any way) πŸ™‚ besides, women don’t have enough testosterone 2 bulk anyway; therefore, there should be NO excuse not 2 lift weights. πŸ™‚ I believe that if men can lift weights, women can do so too as well as asserting that women can do certain things men can 2. • Joanna Soh Official

      July 6, 2019 at 4:26 am

It really depends, but for larger muscles such as your back, chest and leg muscles you can lift heavier, between 6 – 10kgs each dumbbell. For smaller muscles such as your arms, shoulders, lift lighter between 2 – 5kgs each dumbbell. Do watch the video I recommended, it’s at the end, to learn more. =)

ULTIMATE TIPS FOR WEIGHT LOSS PEOPLE!!!:
I actually used to believe in these myths until I started lifting weights a few months ago. And trust me, you only get bigger if you overeat more than you burn. So, if you don’t want to get bigger, you have to eat clean majority of the time in your diet. And not only temporarily, but for the REST OF YOUR LIFE. Basically eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, with a little meat, like fish or chicken, in your overall diet. (But EAT IN PORTION (learn how to by watching videos online, they explain it pretty clearly), don’t just stuff your mouth and binge on your food [otherwise you WILL GAIN WEIGHT]. Eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with fruit snacks NOT DRIED FRUIT CHIPS, but the actual fruits. ) Don’t buy anything that is in packages. Just buy something that is ONLY grown in nature. You don’t need to lift big ass weights. I lift only two 5 lb dumbbells, and I don’t just lift it up and down. There are some different postures in which the dumbbells helps me focus on specific area of my muscle. My arm only got leaner and toner, but it did not get bulky like those competitive women. Oh! and look up some of those workout exercises, like pilates or cardio movements that you do at home. You don’t need to go to the gym to lose weight AT ALL. Search up those programs that lasts for a few months and they show you different ways to exercise. Don’t do the same exercise routine everyday, otherwise your body will get used to it. I actually use Jillian’s Michael Body revolution (you can just buy it on amazon, but I just use *cough* free online videos to watch it *cough* I didn’t buy it lol, i’m too cheap and poor cuz i’m a uni student [that means I’m pretty busy with all those stressful tests, and I’m majoring in computer science]) and it’s an exercise that you do 30 min. 6 times per week, with cardio and muscle training. you can just search up a calendar for it on google. Just search up “Jillian’s Michael Body revolution calendar” to follow what video to watch. She’s VERY VERY motivating. Trust me. I always used excuses to not exercise (like “Oh! I have a huge test next week”), but if you have time to watch youtube videos or do something else for fun, for at least 30 min per day, then you have time to get your ass up and workout. *You can only get the body you want if you work for it.* For instance, those VS models workout about 3-4 hours EVERYDAY, and they don’t consume that much calories either. But this is VERY unhealthy for your body, and it’s their job to look good, so don’t worry if you don’t have a model body. Instead, pursue for healthy, fit, and toned body, like Joanna Soh. Don’t be underweight, but be at a normal weight, because if you are underweight, you pretty much look unhealthy (no offense) you want to have a bmi of at least 18.5 – 25. I recommend the range of 18.5-23 if you’re an adult asian like me (I’m burmese-chinese btw), since we’re already petite in terms of our bone structure. I’m 5’7 and ppl call me skinny all the time when i had a bmi of 23 and that I had to eat more, which I don’t. lol. So yeah… just follow my advice because it took me some time to write this long ass essay-like comment.

    • Callimo

      July 6, 2019 at 4:26 am

Nah, i was with you until you said you don’t have to lift huge ass weights. Nah, I wanna lift heavy, and even lifting heavy won’t bulk you up at all and will actually challenge and strengthen your bones much faster. You need a very specialized diet to bulk up from lifting heavy.

      Great information

    • Faustina

      July 6, 2019 at 4:26 am

yup! I always thought I needed to join the gym to lose weight, but working out at home is equally as efficient. Plus, it’s waaay more cheaper since we’re poor lol. After I get a good job, I’ll probably buy a treadmill at home lol. For now, I just watch workout videos online and do it at home with my 2 dumbbells, a yoga mat, and a resistance tube. Plus with all my programming projects, I don’t have time to workout for more than 1 hr, so I just try to do it really early in the morning to wake me up. That way, instead of drinking caffeine, I just workout to wake up my body in order to focus in class and studies. Oh! And thanks for your appreciation!

      July 6, 2019 at 4:26 am

mariashi Nyaung “it took me a long ass time to write this essay-like post”
      – And i appreciate you for it. I agree with you. lately i’ve been considering joining a gym to gain muscle. but i work full time and im a Uni student as well. i lost a lot of inches and got toned one smmer from doing at home work outs. i’ve been able to maintain that size but i want to gain muscle. i guess buying weights and working from home would save time and money.

Not related to this video, but looking for an opinion – will hula hooping with a weighted hula hoop tone your core? I know it will burn calories but will I tone up my stomach noticeably (say witching a few months)? I’m not willing to pay 50+ dollars on something that won’t really benefit me in the way I want it to.

Do you have any knowledge on fitness hula hoops? Anybody in the comments can answer too

    • reeturkass

You dont need a weighted hula hoop to train your core. There are a lot of free ab workout videos in youtube. And remember – abs are made in the kitchen.

    • Joanna Soh Official

      July 6, 2019 at 4:26 am

Oooo.. Shoulder press can be challenging to begin with as our shoulder muscles are small. You can start be lifting really light dumbbells, 1 – 2kgs each and practice shoulder press using them. Eventually, try to go on to the machine and perform 5 reps, slowly increase the reps and weight as you get stronger. =)

Joanna Soh Official You look terrific! I couldn’t make it to the gym tonight, so I tried 2 of your workouts that I’d never done before. I did your kickboxing workout and burned 236 calories (according to my Fitbit) and your 25-Total Body weight training video and burned 169 calories πŸ”₯ I was literally dripping in sweat and felt amazing! Excited to see all the new content you’re coming up with πŸ€—

Can’t agree more! I actually gained almost 2 kgs in the past 3 months, but people around me is saying that I look slimming. LOL!!! I myself have been increasing my strength training workout and notice the difference, BUT definitely not on the scale. =)

how many kilos should I lift if I were slightly advance ?!

    • Andy M

      July 6, 2019 at 4:26 am

Menna thats hard to say without knowing more about you. But she gave the tip that if you can do more than 15 reps without much struggle, then you’re not lifting enough. So try it out, see what you can do!

    July 6, 2019 at 4:26 am

Hi joanna! I have a question. if you “lift weights” with your body weight, will you still achieve the goodness of lifting weights or not? I would love to lift weights but I’m still a teenager LOL. What do you think I should do?

    • Jessica Lindstrom

      July 6, 2019 at 4:26 am

Joanna Soh Official thank you for replying! ^_^ I think I’ll increase the intensity of it! ^_^

    • Joanna Soh Official

      July 6, 2019 at 4:26 am

Strength training using your body weight is also effective, but if you’ve been doing the workout for quite sometime and your muscles are adapted to it and you would like to progress, then the next step forward is to make it more challenging by lifting weights, increase the reps, or even make the workout explosive such as squat jump. =)

I was advised from my doctor not to lift weight

    • NyanNayn

      July 6, 2019 at 4:26 am

rora lazoza I think there’s risk to everything. Personally I am more afraid of cycling and falling than sitting down and lifting light weights. I think the key is to start off very very light and simple. We lift stuff in our everyday life anyway. No good trainer will start you off with heavy resistance right away. First you need to get acquainted with the movements πŸ™‚ You can also do body weight exercises like pushups and lunges, just as great in my opinion.

    • rora lazoza

      July 6, 2019 at 4:26 am

Great video, Joanna! I don’t use physical weights a lot (although I own a set), but I do a lot of bodyweightΒ exercises with pilates and my body and health have totally changed with all of the muscle building/toning. Just like you said – the biggest perk is the confidence and positive outlook, and it keeps me mentally/emotionally healthy. I’m looking to start incorporating more physical weights into my exercises to keep challenging myself beyond just my bodyweight, and I look forward to using some of the videos you provided. Thanks!

    • Joanna Soh Official

      July 6, 2019 at 4:26 am

How much cardio(HITT or other) and how much weight trening per week if i train 3-5 days a week

    • Joanna Soh Official

      July 6, 2019 at 4:26 am

I’d like to keep simple and just think of 2 training sessions for each – 2 weight training, 2 HIIT and 2 low intensity training. This will allow enough time for your muscles to recover, grow and perform at their best.

  196. Saina Joof

joanna can u pls upload videos for obese people who are more than 100kgs and suffering from thyroid, pcod how to fight against them for weight reduction… many women in asian countries are suffering from these conditions and they are struggling a lot to reduce their weight so wat kind of exercise and diet plan these obese people can take? please upload it joanna it will be very helpful…

    • Taehyung's Flower

      July 6, 2019 at 4:26 am

I have pocs and you can fight pocs only if you eat clean and do sports, that’s how I’m fighting it and this kind of advices you should better ask a doctor not a fitness guru on youtube (that means, zero sugar intake, zero carbs-specially the refined ones and increase your vegetables and eat per meal 170 g of protein) If you have a thyroid problem your gallbladder may be ill ass well, if you want to eat fat only from avocado, olive oil, coconut oil. Processed fats are also very bad for you.
